Giving her expensive gifts and taking it back, then asking her why she gave it back to him. Trusting her and then yelling at her for staying out too late. Staying loyal and then sleeping around with other people and leaving for a few weeks. It was difficult and unpredictable watching Basquiat one day loving Mallouk, then hating her the next. One of the many things that intrigued me was the complexity of Basquiat’s character. ![]() This is extremely prevalent throughout the story that revolves around drug use and promiscuity.įor this story, it’s important to remember: “Don’t criticize what you cannot understand.” This is especially important to remember as you read through the vivid, raw, and emotional imagery that Clement writes in as she describes the complexity of the characters and scenes. ![]() "Widow Basquiat" by Jennifer Clement is set in New York during the 1980s, a period warped around pop culture, drugs, sex, and art. ![]()
